Role of Practical Theology in Faith Communities and the Broader Public
2020 Conclusion: The role of Practical Theology is to demonstrate actively the core beliefs of the Christian faith that are centered around loving God by loving our neighbors as we love ourselves. Christian love is an active verb, not a romantic notion that sits lifeless on the pages of manuscripts, but animates the lives of believers to celebrate life and to serve other human beings. Practical Theology takes many forms helping to demonstrate that the Holy Spirit is at work in the world forming, reforming and transforming communities of professed believers and others in ways we are just beginning to understand.
The role of practical theology is to provide tools for clergy and lay people to live lives that reflect a deep sense of grace and belief that living abundantly is possible in the here and now of this God's kindom.
No amount of ritual, sermonizing, or systematically theologizing without moving people to the practice of actively loving, moves communities to reflect love written on hearts. People who worship differently can understand justice. People who speak different languages can understand kindness. People who perceive God and the cosmos differently can understand humility. The role of practical theology is to seek what God requires of us - do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with thy God. If we do that maybe things will become more on earth as it is in heaven.
